Toothache is one of the most common dental complain and can be quite disturbing and painful. A dental emergency can occur anytime, anywhere without any warning. It is important to be regular with dental check-ups to lower the risk of unwanted toothache and other dental emergencies.
Reasons for toothache
The dental pulp is the innermost layer of the tooth that contains the blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. The dental pulp is what enables the sensations of tooth pain or sensitivity. A sensation of pain or discomfort is felt when the pulp is inflamed or irritated. The pain or sensation can be felt while eating, drinking, or even with breathing. This pain can be acute and sharp or can be dull and lingering. Following are some of the common factors that can cause tooth pain:
- Inflammation of gums and surrounding tissues
- Tooth decay
- Continuous grinding or bruxism
- Trauma or fracture of the tooth
- Inflammation of pulpal tissue
- Impacted wisdom tooth
Home remedies to temporarily control pain:
Lukewarm water and salt rinses: This is one of the most widely recommended remedies for temporary pain relieve at home. Stir two tablespoons of salt n 8 ounces of lukewarm water. Swishing or gargling with salt water helps in reducing the bacterial count by temporarily increasing the pH balance of oral cavity creating an alkaline environment, which makes it difficult for acidic bacteria to survive.
Apply ice or cold compressions: Pain due to inflammation or swelling can be relieved by applying ice or cold compressions inside and outside the mouth. Cold application numbs the affected part, which not only reduces the pain and tenderness but also helps in subsiding swelling and inflammation.
Peppermint: Peppermint is also an excellent home remedy to relieve pain due to its anaesthetic properties. Take fresh leaves of peppermint and place over the affected area for atleast 20 minutes until pain subsides. Another method is to take a few drops of peppermint extract and apply it over the affected area with a cotton swab, leave it there for a few minutes and you will start feeling better.
Cucumber: The coolness of cucumber can help bring relief to the aching tooth. Keep the chilled slice of cucumber over the affected area in the mouth. It does not have any antibacterial properties but can help a little with immediate pain relief.
Teabags: Teabags are an effective remedy for gum swelling due to wisdom tooth infection. The best way to use a tea bag is to pour a cup of tea then keeping it in the refrigerator with the tea bag until its nice and cold. Take the tea bag and place it over the affected area. This helps in inflammation around the swollen gums.
Oils: Various oils have pain-relieving and antibacterial inflammatory properties that can be used as a method for temporary relief of swelling and toothache such as clove oil, tea tree oil, nutmeg oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, and oregano oil. Rinse with a small amount of oil or place an oil damped swab over the affected area.
